Save ChatGPT chats as documents
Export ChatGPT Conversations to PDF, Word or Google Docs
ChatGPT can share a chat by link and download your whole history as a ZIP, but it has no button that turns a conversation into a document. These extensions add one. Pick the format you need and the chat, the answer or the messages you choose become a PDF, a Word file or a Google Doc in a click.
By the Chat Downloader team · Updated · How we research
Quick answer: ChatGPT has no built-in way to save one conversation as a document. Its own options are a share link, a ZIP export of your whole history, and PDF or Word downloads for Deep Research reports and Canvas documents. For everything else, a free Chrome extension adds PDF, Word and Google Docs buttons to chatgpt.com that export the whole chat, one answer or selected messages in a click.
What ChatGPT gives you, and what it doesn't
Before installing anything, it helps to know exactly what ChatGPT can do on its own, because for two kinds of content it's already enough.
| You want | ChatGPT's own option | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Show a chat to someone | Share → Create link. Anyone with the link can read it; the link is a snapshot until you choose Update link | It's a web page, not a file, and it disappears when you delete the link |
| A backup of everything | Settings → Data controls → Export data. A ZIP arrives by email, sometimes days later, with a 24-hour download link | All chats at once, in data formats, not a readable document of one chat |
| A Deep Research report as a file | Download from the report's header as PDF, Word or Markdown | Report only, without your follow-up questions; no Google Docs |
| A Canvas as a file | Download button in the canvas's top-right corner: PDF, Word or Markdown | The canvas only, not the conversation around it |
| One ordinary conversation as PDF, Word or a Google Doc | Nothing | Copy and paste, print the page, or an extension |
The share link details and the data export steps are documented in OpenAI's help center (shared links, export data). The last row of the table is the gap the extensions fill.
Pick the extension for your format
Three extensions, one engine. They differ only in which buttons they show, so choose by the format you use most.
- ChatGPT to Word or PDF: Word and PDF buttons. The most-installed of the three. Start here if you edit in Word or just want files on your computer. Guide: ChatGPT to Word.
- ChatGPT to PDF, Google Docs or Word: PDF first, with Google Docs and Word alongside. Guide: ChatGPT to PDF.
- Convert ChatGPT to Google Doc, Microsoft Word, PDF: for people whose documents live in Drive. Creates a native Google Doc and opens it. Guide: ChatGPT to Google Docs.
Install one, not all three; they'd add duplicate buttons.
What you can export
With any of them, the same five scopes are available from chatgpt.com:
- The entire conversation, from the toolbar at the top of the chat. The extension fetches the whole chat from ChatGPT's data, so long conversations export completely even though the page only shows a few replies at a time.
- One answer, from the buttons under that reply. Your question is left out unless you turn it on. See saving a single response.
- Selected messages, after switching on Select Messages Checkbox in settings and clicking the messages you want.
- The open Canvas, when a canvas is open; the toolbar buttons switch to it.
- A Deep Research report with its follow-ups, which the official download can't do. See exporting a Deep Research report.
A setting, Include Only ChatGPT Responses in, drops your prompts from full exports or keeps them in single-answer exports, whichever you prefer.
What survives the export
The exports are built from the conversation's content rather than a screenshot, which is what makes them usable afterwards: headings and lists keep their structure, tables are real tables, code blocks keep their indentation, images and charts are embedded as pictures, and links stay clickable. In Word, equations become native, editable equations rather than LaTeX text, which is the reason many people export to Word rather than copy and paste. The PDF is searchable text.
Guides for the awkward cases
- Export your whole ChatGPT history: the official ZIP, what's in it, and its 24-hour link.
- Back up ChatGPT chats: a routine for before you delete chats or close the account.
- Copy a ChatGPT table to Word, Docs or Sheets: fixing the pipes.
- Copy ChatGPT equations to Word: LaTeX to editable equations.
- Print a ChatGPT conversation: why Ctrl+P misses messages.
- Export a Canvas: the built-in download and the canvas-plus-chat route.
Shared chats work too
Open a chatgpt.com/share/… link that someone sent you and the buttons appear there as well, without a ChatGPT sign-in. That's the quickest way to keep a copy of a chat you don't own before its owner deletes the link.
Moving a conversation to another assistant
Exporting is also the first step to continuing a ChatGPT conversation in Claude or giving Claude a ChatGPT answer as context. Moving between ChatGPT and Claude explains what can and can't be imported.
Free plans and privacy
All three extensions are free to install, with a free plan of three entire-conversation and ten single-response exports per month and a paid plan for unlimited use. They run on chatgpt.com only, convert through our conversion service, which keeps no copy of your content, and the Google Docs export can only touch files it creates in your Drive. The privacy policy has the full detail.
