Gemini chat to .docx
Gemini to Word (.docx)
Gemini's only official route to Word is Export to Docs followed by a download from Google Docs, one response at a time. The Gemini extension adds a Word button to gemini.google.com that saves a response or the whole conversation as a .docx directly, with tables, code blocks and equations kept editable.

Verified against the Gemini extension's source (v2.9) and Google's Gemini help center, October 2026.
Quick answer: To export a Gemini chat to Word, install the Gemini extension, open the conversation on gemini.google.com and click Word in the toolbar at the top of the chat.
You get one .docx of the entire conversation, named after the chat, in which tables are Word tables, code keeps its indentation and equations are editable Word equations.
Gemini's own route is Share & export → Export to Docs for one response, then File → Download → Microsoft Word inside Google Docs.
The official two-step route
Google doesn't offer Word as an export target, but Google Docs does, so for a single answer:
- Under the response, click Share & export → Export to Docs (documented on Google's export responses page). A new Google Doc with that answer opens.
- In the Doc, choose File → Download → Microsoft Word (.docx).
Two steps, one response. The result is decent:
- Headings and lists survive.
- Tables become Word tables.
- Images come along.
Equations are where it gets weaker, because Google Docs has no editable equation object to hand to Word, and a conversation of many answers means repeating the steps and merging files.

One step, any scope, with the extension
The AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs for Gemini extension puts a Word button in a toolbar at the top of every Gemini chat and under every response.
- Install it and refresh gemini.google.com.
- For the whole conversation, click Word in the toolbar.
- Because Gemini renders only the recent stretch of a long chat, the extension first works its way back through the history, counting messages as it loads them.
- Stop & Export Now ends that early and exports what it has.
- For one answer, click the Word button under that answer.
- The .docx lands in your Downloads folder, named after the chat's title ("Gemini Content" if the chat has no title yet).
Open it in Word, or upload it to Drive and open it with Google Docs if you prefer to edit there.
What the Word file keeps
Everything Gemini can put in an answer has a Word counterpart in the export:
- Structure comes through as structure: Gemini's headings become Word heading styles, so a navigation pane and a table of contents work immediately, and nested bullets keep their depth.
- Tables are genuine Word tables, with a header row, that you can sort or restyle.
- Code blocks arrive monospaced with indentation preserved, and inline code stays distinguishable from prose.
- Equations are the standout: they become Word's own equation objects, so you can click in and edit a term.
- Images, both the ones Gemini generated and the ones you uploaded, are embedded at their position, and links remain clickable.
Your prompts appear as blocks between the answers so the document reads as a transcript.
If you'd rather have Gemini's side alone, the Export only Gemini responses checkbox in the extension's Conversion settings removes prompts from whole-chat exports. A single-response export is the answer alone in every case.
If you've been fixing equations or tables by hand after pasting, copying Gemini equations to Word and copying a Gemini table to Word explain what the export replaces.
Deep Research reports and Canvas documents in Word
When a Deep Research report, a Canvas document or a code canvas is open in Gemini's side panel, the toolbar's Word button exports that panel rather than the chat; its tooltip changes to "Exports the canvas content as a Word file."
That's the direct way to get a Deep Research report into Word, since Gemini's own option for reports is Export to Docs. Close the panel to export the conversation. Exporting a Deep Research report compares the routes.
When pasting from Gemini is enough
A short answer with no table or maths pastes fine from Gemini's copy button into Word. The export is worth it when:
- The answer has structure that paste loses.
- You need more than one message.
- You want the file named and saved without opening Word first.
For a fixed, shareable file use the PDF export instead, and for paper see printing a Gemini chat; for a Doc in your Drive, the Google Docs export. The Gemini export overview compares every route.
Free plan and limits
