ChatGPT chat to .docx
Export ChatGPT to Word (.docx)
The ChatGPT to Word or PDF extension adds a Word button to chatgpt.com. One click saves the whole conversation, a single answer or the messages you tick as a .docx you can edit, with tables, code blocks and equations intact.

Quick answer: To export a ChatGPT chat to Word, install the ChatGPT to Word or PDF extension, open the conversation on chatgpt.com and click Word in the toolbar at the top of the chat. The whole conversation downloads as a .docx named after the chat, with headings, tables, code blocks and equations kept as editable Word content.
How to export a ChatGPT conversation to Word
- Install the extension. Add ChatGPT to Word or PDF from the Chrome Web Store. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc on a computer.
- Refresh chatgpt.com. A small toolbar with PDF and Word buttons appears at the top of every chat, and the same two buttons appear under each of ChatGPT's answers.
- Pick the scope. Click Word in the top toolbar for the entire conversation, or the Word button under a reply for just that answer. To export a handful of messages, tick Select Messages Checkbox in the extension's settings first, then click the messages you want and use the toolbar button.
- Open the file. The .docx lands in your Downloads folder, named after the chat's title. Open it in Word, or upload it to Google Docs if you prefer to edit there.
The extension doesn't read the few replies that happen to be on screen. It fetches the complete conversation from ChatGPT's own conversation data, so a chat with two hundred messages exports in full even though chatgpt.com only renders a handful at a time.
What the Word file contains
Pasting from ChatGPT into Word usually breaks something: tables flatten into tab-separated lines, equations arrive as \frac{a}{b} text, and code loses its indentation. The export is built from the chat's underlying Markdown, so those elements become their proper Word equivalents.
| In ChatGPT | In the .docx |
|---|---|
| Headings and paragraphs | Word heading styles and body text |
| Bulleted and numbered lists, nested | Word lists at the same depth |
| Tables | Real Word tables you can sort, resize and restyle |
| Equations (LaTeX) | Native Word equations, editable with Word's equation tools |
| Inline code and code blocks | Monospaced text with indentation preserved |
| Images ChatGPT generated and images you uploaded | Embedded pictures |
| Charts ChatGPT drew and Mermaid diagrams | Pictures of the chart or diagram |
| Links and Deep Research citations | Clickable hyperlinks |
If you've been fighting pasted tables or equations by hand, copying a ChatGPT table and copying ChatGPT equations explain what the export replaces. Your prompts are laid out as shaded blocks between the answers, so the document reads as a transcript rather than a wall of text. If you'd rather have a clean document of only the answers, see the setting below.
Replies only, or the whole transcript?
The default export is the full transcript: your prompts and ChatGPT's replies in order. Two settings change that.
- Entire conversation exports under Include Only ChatGPT Responses in: tick it and full exports drop your prompts. Useful when ChatGPT wrote a report in stages and you want the stages, not your nudges.
- Single response exports in the same group: by default a single-answer export contains only the answer. Tick this if you want the question kept above it, for example when the answer only makes sense alongside the prompt.
Both are in the extension's settings panel, opened from the gear icon on the toolbar. They apply to Word and PDF alike.
Exporting the messages you choose
Long chats often contain one useful stretch and a lot of exploration. Rather than exporting everything and deleting in Word:
- Open the extension settings and switch on Select Messages Checkbox.
- A checkbox appears in the toolbar. Tick it, then click each message you want. Selected messages show a Selected badge.
- Click Word in the toolbar. The tooltip confirms how many messages will be exported.
Selected messages keep their original order in the document, and your prompts come along only if they were selected.
Canvas and Deep Research in Word
ChatGPT has its own Word downloads for two kinds of content, and the extension covers the gap between them and the rest of the chat:
- Canvas documents have a download button in the canvas's top-right corner that saves a .docx of the canvas text (exporting a Canvas covers the options). When a canvas is open, the extension's toolbar buttons switch to exporting the canvas too, which matters if you also want the conversation around it.
- Deep Research reports can be downloaded from ChatGPT as Word, PDF or Markdown. The extension's Word export adds what that download leaves out: your follow-up questions and ChatGPT's answers to them, in the same document as the report. Exporting a Deep Research report compares the two in detail.
When copy and paste is enough
For a short answer with no tables or maths, ChatGPT's own copy button under the reply and a paste into Word works fine, and Word keeps the headings and lists in most cases. The export earns its place when the answer has a table, an equation, code, or when you want more than one message; saving a single response covers the one-answer case. You can also ask ChatGPT to "create a Word document" of an answer. It will often produce a .docx, but it rewrites the content into the file rather than copying the chat, so check it against the original before you rely on it.
Shared chats and other people's conversations
A link that starts with https://chatgpt.com/share/ opens the conversation for anyone who has it. The extension works on those pages as well: open the link, wait for it to load, and the Word button is there. That's the easiest way to turn a chat a colleague shared into a document you can edit, and it doesn't require you to be signed in to ChatGPT. Note that a shared link is a snapshot. If the owner keeps chatting, the link doesn't update until they choose Update link in ChatGPT's Share dialog, so what you export is what was shared.
Free plan and limits
The extension is free to install and use. The free plan allows three entire-conversation exports and ten single-response exports each month, counted against the Google account signed in to your browser, and the allowance resets at the beginning of each month. The paid plan removes the limits; the current price is shown in the Manage License window inside the extension.
Need a fixed file instead of an editable one? The same extension's PDF export works identically, and the ChatGPT export overview compares every route out of ChatGPT. Looking for the same thing for a different assistant? Exporting a Claude chat to Word covers the Claude extension, which works the same way but adds artifacts and Markdown.
