Copy a Table from ChatGPT to Word, Google Docs or Sheets
ChatGPT writes tables in Markdown, so a paste sometimes gives you a grid of pipe characters instead of a table. This guide shows what to do in Word, Google Docs and Google Sheets, and how to export the table as a real one in one click.

Quick answer: To copy a table from ChatGPT to Word, use ChatGPT's copy button under the answer and paste into Word; Word usually keeps it as a table. If you get rows of pipe characters instead, select them and use Insert → Table → Convert Text to Table with | as the separator. To skip the cleanup, the ChatGPT to Word or PDF extension exports the answer as a .docx in which the table is already a real Word table.
What ChatGPT actually puts on your clipboard
Every table ChatGPT shows is written in Markdown: a header row, a divider row of dashes, and cells separated by |. The page renders that as a grid. When you click the copy button under an answer, ChatGPT places two versions on the clipboard, the formatted version and the raw Markdown text. Which one you get depends on the app:
- Word and most email clients take the formatted version, so the table usually arrives intact.
- Google Docs sometimes takes it, sometimes shows the raw pipes, depending on the browser and how much else is in the answer.
- Plain-text fields, Google Sheets cells and note apps take the Markdown text, so you see pipes.
Selecting the table with the mouse and copying, rather than using the copy button, tends to give better results in Google Docs because the browser copies the rendered grid. Knowing which version you're dealing with tells you which fix below applies.
Word
If the table pasted correctly: you're done. Click inside it and use Table Design to restyle it; the header row is already a header row.
If you see pipes: convert the text.
- Delete the divider row, the one that looks like
|---|---|. (Word would turn it into a row of dashes otherwise.) - Select all the remaining rows.
- Go to Insert → Table → Convert Text to Table… (Microsoft's steps: convert text to a table).
- Under Separate text at, choose Other and type
|. Word fills in the number of columns. Click OK. - Markdown rows start and end with a pipe, which gives you an empty first and last column. Select each and delete it (Layout → Delete → Delete Columns).
- Select the first row and tick Header Row under Table Design so it repeats on each page.
For a one-off table this takes a minute. For a chat full of tables, the export below is faster.
Google Docs
Google Docs doesn't reliably convert Markdown tables, even with Paste from Markdown switched on, so the workable routes are:
- Copy the rendered table. Drag-select the table on chatgpt.com (not the copy button), copy, and paste into the Doc. In Chrome this usually produces a real Docs table.
- Go through Sheets. Paste the pipes into Google Sheets, split them into columns (next section), then copy the cells from Sheets into the Doc; Docs turns pasted spreadsheet cells into a table.
- Export to a Doc. The Convert ChatGPT to Google Doc extension creates a Google Doc of the answer with the table already built. ChatGPT to Google Docs covers the setup.
Google Sheets
When the table is really data, Sheets is where it should go, and the pipes are easy to split:
- Paste the rows into column A. Each row lands in one cell.
- Delete the divider row of dashes.
- Select the cells and choose Data → Split text to columns (Google's steps). In the separator dropdown that appears, choose Custom and type
|. - Delete the empty first and last columns created by the leading and trailing pipes, and trim spaces with Data → Data cleanup → Trim whitespace if numbers aren't being recognised.
Faster still: ask ChatGPT for the same table "as CSV" or "as tab-separated values". Paste the result into Sheets and it splits into columns on its own. For a large table, ask ChatGPT to "create an Excel file" of it; it can produce an .xlsx you download and open in Sheets or Excel, which keeps numbers as numbers.
The export that keeps every table a table
If you'd rather not fix tables at all, the ChatGPT to Word or PDF extension builds the document from the chat's underlying content, so each Markdown table becomes a real Word table: header row set, borders on, columns sized to content. Click the Word button under the answer that contains the table, or in the toolbar for the whole chat, and open the .docx. The same applies to PDF, where the table is laid out inside the page margins rather than clipped. ChatGPT to Word lists everything else the file keeps, and the ChatGPT export overview compares the routes.
Checks before you rely on a pasted table
- Numbers: a column that looks numeric may contain stray spaces or non-breaking spaces from the paste, which stops Excel and Sheets from summing it. Reformat the column as a number and look for cells that stay left-aligned.
- Alignment: Markdown tables carry no column widths. After conversion, set them in Word (Layout → AutoFit) rather than trusting the defaults.
- Long cells: text that wraps inside a cell on chatgpt.com is still one cell; it's only line breaks inside cells that Markdown can't represent.
- The source: if ChatGPT computed the numbers, verify them. The paste preserves whatever was there, right or wrong.
Equations inside tables need their own handling; see copying equations from ChatGPT to Word. The Claude version of this problem is slightly different because of how Claude's copy button works: copy a table from Claude to Word.
