Gemini chat to PDF

Gemini to PDF

Gemini can send a response to Google Docs, but it has no PDF button. The Gemini extension adds one: click PDF under an answer or in the toolbar at the top of the chat and the response, or the whole conversation with its earlier messages loaded, downloads as a searchable PDF.

Available in the Chrome Web Store
  • One click inside gemini.google.com
  • PDF, Word (.docx), Google Docs and Markdown
  • Full chat, single response or Gemini's replies only
  • Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc

Verified against the Gemini extension's source (v2.9) and Google's Gemini help center, October 2026.

Quick answer: Gemini has no PDF export of its own, so the one-click route is the Gemini extension: with it installed, a PDF button appears at the top of every chat on gemini.google.com and under every answer.

The toolbar button loads the earlier messages Gemini hasn't rendered, then downloads the whole conversation as a searchable PDF named after the chat. Gemini's built-in menu covers Google Docs, Gmail and Sheets, not PDF.

The two routes without an extension, and their limits

(The general test for any exporter is in how to choose an AI chat exporter.)

Export to Docs, then download as PDF. Under a Gemini answer, click Share & export → Export to Docs (Google's export responses page). A new Google Doc opens; in it, choose File → Download → PDF Document.

This is Google's intended path and it works well for one answer.

The catch is scope: Export to Docs takes one response at a time, so a conversation of twenty exchanges means twenty Docs or a lot of copying between them.

Print the page. Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) on gemini.google.com with Save as PDF as the destination.

Quick, but Gemini keeps only the recent stretch of a long chat in the page and loads the rest as you scroll up, so the print dialog captures a fragment, and the sidebar and input box come along.

Printing a Gemini chat covers how to get the most out of it anyway.

For one answer, Export to Docs is fine. For the whole conversation, or for a PDF with no detour, the extension is the shorter route.

How to save a Gemini chat as a PDF with the extension

  1. Install AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs for Gemini from the Chrome Web Store. Desktop Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc are supported.
  2. Refresh gemini.google.com. A toolbar with Google Docs, Word, PDF and Markdown buttons appears at the top of the chat, and the same buttons appear under each answer.
  3. Click PDF in the toolbar. The extension scrolls back through the conversation to load every earlier message, showing "Loaded N messages so far…" as it goes.
    • For a long chat this takes a few minutes; if the recent part is all you need, Stop & Export Now stops the loading and exports immediately.
  4. Once the messages are gathered, the PDF is generated and saved to your Downloads folder, named after the chat's title.

For one answer, click the PDF button under that answer instead. The file contains just the response.

What the PDF contains

The PDF is a document built from the conversation, not a screenshot of the page:

  • Your prompts as blocks, with Gemini's full answer under each, so the file reads as a transcript. The Export only Gemini responses setting drops the prompts if you prefer answers alone.
  • Headings, lists and bold text with their hierarchy, tables with borders, code blocks in a monospaced font with indentation kept.
  • Equations rendered as maths, not as LaTeX text.
  • Images Gemini generated and images you uploaded, placed where they appeared. A response that is only an image exports as that image.
  • Links kept as clickable links.
  • Left out: Gemini's sidebar, the input box, the buttons under each answer and the Share & export controls.

The text is selectable and searchable, and it prints at normal size on A4 or Letter.

Deep Research reports, Canvas and the other panels

When Gemini opens something in a side panel, the toolbar buttons switch to exporting that panel. That covers:

  • A Canvas document.
  • A code canvas.
  • A Deep Research report.
  • A Guided Learning panel.

The PDF tooltip becomes "Exports the canvas content as a PDF file." Close the panel to export the conversation itself.

Deep Research reports also have Gemini's own Export to Docs; exporting a Deep Research report compares the two.

Gemini in Google Search and AI Studio

The same extension adds its buttons to Google Search's AI Mode answers and to prompts in Google AI Studio, so an AI Mode answer you want to keep can be saved as a PDF the same way.

The buttons appear under the answer once the page has finished loading.

One thing the extension can't do is export a chat someone shared with you by link; Gemini share links explains why and what to do instead.

Free plan and limits

The extension costs nothing to install and has a monthly allowance on the free plan, lifted by the paid plan. The plans and limits page explains how exports are counted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export a Gemini chat to PDF?

Not with Gemini's own tools. Gemini's Share & export menu offers Google Docs, Gmail and Sheets but no PDF. Either export a response to Docs and download the Doc as PDF, or use the Gemini extension, which adds a PDF button for a response or the whole chat.

Why does printing Gemini with Ctrl+P miss the start of the chat?

Because Gemini only keeps the recent part of a long conversation on the page and loads earlier messages as you scroll up. The print dialog prints what's loaded. The extension scrolls back and loads the earlier messages before building the PDF.

Is the PDF searchable text?

Yes. The PDF is built from the conversation's content, so you can search it, copy from it and print it at normal size. Images Gemini generated are embedded as pictures inside the text.

Can I export only Gemini's answers to the PDF?

Yes. Open the extension's settings and tick Export only Gemini responses under Conversion settings. Whole-chat exports then leave out your prompts. A single-response export never includes the prompt.

How long does a long conversation take?

A short chat exports in seconds. A long one takes a few minutes because the extension has to scroll back and load every earlier message first; it shows how many it has loaded, and Stop & Export Now exports what's loaded so far.

Does it work on my phone?

No. The extension runs in desktop Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc. On a phone, export a response to Google Docs from Gemini's Share & export menu and download the Doc as PDF from the Docs app.
