How ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini Share and Export Conversations
All three assistants can share a conversation by link and hand you your whole history, and all three stop short of saving an ordinary chat as a document. The details differ in ways that matter if you need to keep what you wrote: who can open a link, whether it updates, what's left out, how long an export takes.

Quick answer: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all share chats by link and all export your full history, but none of them saves an ordinary conversation as a PDF or Word file. Their defaults differ in three ways:
- ChatGPT and Gemini links open for anyone, Claude defaults to sharing with named people.
- ChatGPT and Claude links update only when the owner chooses, Gemini needs a new link.
- Claude's export arrives in minutes, ChatGPT's in up to seven days, Gemini's through Takeout in hours to days.
Share links
| ChatGPT | Claude | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How to share | Share → Create link | Share, then choose specific people (default) or a public link | Share → Share conversation under any response |
| Who can open it | Anyone with the link (personal accounts); workspace members only in Business, Enterprise, Edu | Public link: anyone, no account. Specific people: only those emails, signed in | Anyone with the link, and they can reshare it |
| Plans | All | Public links on Free, Pro and Max; Team and Enterprise can't make them | All, unless a Workspace admin disables sharing |
| What's included | Conversation, supported images and uploaded files | Conversation and artifacts; attached files excluded (except within an organisation); connector data excluded | Whole conversation, uploaded images, generated Canvas docs, images and videos |
| Scope | Whole conversation (or a single response) | Whole conversation | Whole conversation, whichever response you click Share under |
| Later messages | Not included until Update link (workspace links can include them) | Not included until Update shared chat | Not included; share again for a new link |
| Can viewers continue it | No | No | Yes, Continue this chat copies it to their account (not for Gem chats, under-18s, or without a subscription if the owner has one) |
| Revoke | Settings → Data controls → Shared links | Unshare from the Share dialog | Settings & help → Your public links |
| Dies when | Deleted, or the chat is deleted | Unshared or chat deleted | Link deleted, chat deleted or auto-deleted, or chat drops out of pinned and recent |

The practical consequences:
- A Claude link you receive may need you to be signed in as a named person, which is also why a Claude share link fails more often than the others.
- A Gemini link can be continued by strangers, so share only what you'd publish; Gemini share links covers the implications.
- A ChatGPT link includes your uploaded files, which the other two mostly don't.
Built-in downloads
| ChatGPT | Claude | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|---|
| An ordinary conversation as a file | None | None | None |
| One response | Copy button (Markdown) | Copy button (Markdown) | Share & export → Export to Docs or Draft in Gmail; tables: Export to Sheets |
| Research reports | Deep Research: download as PDF, Word or Markdown | Research runs as a normal response; no separate download | Deep Research panel: Export to Docs |
| Side-panel documents | Canvas: download as PDF, Word or Markdown; code as a source file | Docs, Slides and Design artifacts: Export; older artifacts: copy and download controls | Canvas: Share & export menu with Export to Docs |
| Files the assistant creates on request | Yes, downloadable from the chat | Yes, with file creation enabled | Yes, within its tools |
Gemini is the only one with a built-in path to a Google Doc for any response, and the only one with none to PDF.
ChatGPT is the only one that downloads a research report as Word or Markdown. Claude's export buttons exist only on the newer artifact types.
Everything else needs the extension or another method.

Each section has a walkthrough: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini.
All three exports are data archives rather than documents. They are the right backup of everything and the wrong way to get one conversation into a readable file.
What this means for keeping your work
- If you'll need a chat as a document, plan for an export at the time rather than relying on the link. Links die with the chat in all three; Gemini's die with auto-delete too.
- If you share with people outside your organisation, ChatGPT and Gemini links are the frictionless ones; a Claude public link works equally well but has to be chosen deliberately.
- If you work in a Team, Enterprise or Workspace account, assume public links and self-service exports may be unavailable, and ask the administrator before you depend on them.
- If the content is a report, use the built-in download where one exists (ChatGPT Deep Research, Gemini's Export to Docs) and export the surrounding conversation separately if the reasoning matters.
The extensions described in each section fill the common gap, a conversation as PDF, Word, Google Docs or Markdown, the same way for all three assistants; choosing an exporter explains how to judge that route against the others.
