Gemini chat to .md

Gemini to Markdown

Gemini's Share & export menu offers Google Docs, Gmail and Sheets, but nothing for notes tools or developers. The Gemini extension adds a Markdown button under every response and in the toolbar, so a single answer or the whole conversation downloads as a .md file ready for Notion, Obsidian, GitHub or any Markdown editor.

Available in the Chrome Web Store
  • One click inside gemini.google.com
  • PDF, Word (.docx), Google Docs and Markdown
  • Full chat, single response or Gemini's replies only
  • Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc

Quick answer: A Gemini chat becomes a Markdown file with the Gemini extension: once it's installed, a Markdown button sits in the toolbar at the top of every chat and under every response on gemini.google.com.

A .md file downloads with headings, lists, tables, fenced code blocks and LaTeX equations intact, ready to import into Notion, Obsidian, GitHub or any Markdown editor. Gemini itself has no Markdown export.

Why Markdown, and why Gemini needs help with it

Markdown is the format notes tools and developers live in:

  • Notion imports it.
  • Obsidian is built on it.
  • GitHub renders it.
  • Static-site generators publish it.

Gemini's answers are written in it underneath, which is why headings and bullet lists render the way they do. But Gemini only lets you take them out as Google Docs, Gmail drafts or Sheets tables (Google's export responses page lists the options).

The gap shows when you try to copy. Gemini's copy button places formatted text on the clipboard, and what you get depends on where you paste:

  • Obsidian often converts it reasonably.
  • Notion sometimes keeps the formatting and sometimes doesn't.
  • A plain editor loses it.

For one paragraph that's fine. For a long answer with tables and code, or for a whole conversation, a proper .md file is the reliable route.

How to export Gemini to Markdown

  1. Add AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs for Gemini to a desktop browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc) and reload gemini.google.com.
  2. Look for the new toolbar above the chat: Markdown is the fourth button, after Google Docs, Word and PDF, and each answer gets the same set underneath.
  3. Click Markdown under an answer for that answer alone, or in the toolbar for the full conversation. In the second case:
    • The extension pages back through the chat history before building the file and shows a running count.
    • Stop & Export Now skips the rest if the beginning doesn't matter to you.
  4. The .md file lands in your Downloads folder, named after the chat.

For a file of Gemini's answers without your prompts, switch on Export only Gemini responses in the extension's settings before exporting. Single-response exports contain the answer only.

What's in the .md file

  • Headings as # levels matching Gemini's structure, bold and italic, links as Markdown links.
  • Lists, bulleted and numbered, with nesting preserved.
  • Tables as pipe tables, which Obsidian, GitHub and Notion render as tables.
  • Code blocks with their fences and language hints, indentation intact.
  • Equations as LaTeX between $…$ or $$…$$, which Obsidian and most Markdown renderers display as maths.
  • Your prompts as blocks between the answers, unless you've turned them off.

Treat images as something to check: Gemini-generated images are referenced in the file, but how they display depends on the tool you import into, so open the result once before relying on it for an image-heavy chat.

Importing into Notion, Obsidian and elsewhere

  • Obsidian: drop the .md file into your vault folder. It appears as a note with headings, tables, code and maths rendered. Add front matter or tags at the top if you organise by metadata.
  • Notion: use Import → Text & Markdown on the page or workspace, or drag the file into a page. Headings, lists, tables and code blocks convert to Notion blocks.
  • GitHub, GitLab, wikis: commit the file or paste its contents; it renders as-is.
  • Another assistant: a Markdown file is the cleanest way to hand a Gemini conversation to ChatGPT or Claude as context, since nothing is lost to formatting. Moving between ChatGPT and Claude describes what the receiving assistant can do with it.

Markdown versus the other formats

Use the format that fits the destination:

  • Markdown when the destination is a notes tool, a repository or another AI.
  • Word when a person will edit the document with tracked changes or needs editable equations in Word's own editor.
  • PDF when the content is finished and will be read or filed.
  • Google Docs, either Gemini's own Export to Docs for one answer or the extension's button for the whole chat, when colleagues will comment in Docs.

All of these are set side by side in the Gemini export overview; for the whole-account archive rather than one chat, see exporting your Gemini history.

The Claude extension offers the same Markdown export with a few differences: Claude to Markdown. For what to do with the files, see AI chats to Notion and AI chats to Obsidian.

Free plan and limits

Markdown exports draw from the same free monthly allowance as the other formats, and the paid plan removes it; see plans and limits.

Frequently asked questions

Does Gemini have a Markdown export?

No. Gemini's Share & export offers Google Docs, Gmail and, for tables, Sheets. Markdown isn't among them. The Gemini extension adds a Markdown button for a response or the whole chat.

Can I just copy a Gemini answer as Markdown?

Not reliably. Gemini's copy button copies formatted text, and what lands in your editor depends on the app: some convert it to Markdown, others keep rich text or drop the formatting. The export gives you a clean .md file every time.

Does the Markdown file keep tables, code and equations?

Yes. Tables become Markdown tables, code blocks keep their fences and indentation, and equations are written as LaTeX between dollar signs, which Obsidian and most Markdown renderers display as maths.

Can I export the whole conversation to one Markdown file?

Yes. The toolbar's Markdown button loads the earlier messages Gemini hasn't rendered and exports the whole chat to one .md file. Tick Export only Gemini responses in the extension's settings to leave your prompts out.

Is Markdown export free?

Yes. Markdown exports use the same free plan as the other formats: three entire-conversation exports and ten single-response exports a month, with a paid plan for unlimited use.
