How to Save AI Chats to Notion
Notion imports Markdown, and all three assistants write in Markdown underneath, so the clean route into Notion is a Markdown file of the conversation and Notion's import. Pasting works for a paragraph; for tables, code blocks and long chats, the file route keeps the structure. Here's the workflow and what to expect from each assistant.

Quick answer: To save an AI chat to Notion, export the conversation as a Markdown file and import it with Notion's Import → Text & Markdown option, which turns headings, lists, tables and code blocks into Notion blocks.
The Claude and Gemini extensions have a Markdown button for a response or a whole chat; ChatGPT needs the copy button for one answer or a Word export. None of the assistants has a Notion button of its own.
Why Markdown is the right bridge
Notion stores pages as blocks, and its importer maps Markdown onto them well:
#headings become heading blocks.- Bullet and numbered lists keep their nesting.
- Pipe tables become Notion tables.
- Fenced code becomes a code block with the language label.
- Links survive.
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all render their answers from Markdown, so a Markdown export is the assistant's own structure, not a reconstruction of it.
The things that don't map cleanly are equations (Notion has its own inline and block equation syntax) and images, which need a second look after import.
Getting a Markdown file from each assistant
- Claude: the Claude to PDF, Word and Google Docs extension has a Markdown button (switch it on in the extension's settings) at the top of the chat and under each answer.
- The file is created in your browser and includes images as embedded data.
- Claude to Markdown covers it, including Claude's own copy button, which already gives you Markdown for one answer.
- Gemini: the Gemini extension's Markdown button, in the toolbar and under each response, exports a response or the whole conversation after loading the earlier messages. Gemini to Markdown.
- ChatGPT: the ChatGPT extensions don't export Markdown.
- For one answer, ChatGPT's copy button copies the answer as Markdown; paste it into a Notion page and Notion converts it.
- For a whole conversation, export to Word with the extension (ChatGPT to Word) and import the .docx, which Notion also accepts, or open the .docx in Google Docs and download it as Markdown from there.
Whichever route, decide first whether you want your prompts in the page. The Claude and Gemini extensions have a setting to export only the assistant's replies, which reads better as a note; the full transcript is better as a record.
Importing into Notion
- Open the page under which the chat should live, or the database it should join.
- Click the ••• menu (or use the sidebar's Import) and choose Import, then Text & Markdown (Notion's import guide lists the accepted formats).
- Select the .md file. Notion creates a new page titled after the file name, with the content as blocks.
- Open the page and scan it: tables should be editable tables, code blocks should show a language, lists should be nested as they were.
Notion also accepts Word (.docx) in the same import dialog, which is the route for ChatGPT conversations exported to Word.
What to check after import
- Equations. Markdown exports write maths as LaTeX between
$signs. Notion displays that as text.- Convert the ones that matter by selecting the LaTeX and using Notion's Equation block (type
/equation) or inline equation ($$at the start of a line, or Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+E), pasting the LaTeX inside.
- Convert the ones that matter by selecting the LaTeX and using Notion's Equation block (type
- Images. Images referenced by URL may not import; images embedded as data (Claude's Markdown) generally do but make the file large. Re-add any that are missing from the original chat.
- Prompts. If the export included your prompts as quoted or shaded blocks, Notion shows them as callouts or quotes. Convert or delete as you prefer.
- Length. Very long conversations import as very long pages. Consider splitting a chat into one page per topic, or exporting only the answers.
Doing it without an extension
If you'd rather not install anything, two routes still work:
- For a single answer, use the assistant's copy button and paste into a Notion page. Notion converts Markdown-style headings, lists and code as it pastes, and tables usually come through from ChatGPT and Claude, less reliably from Gemini.
- For a whole conversation, Gemini's own Share & export → Export to Docs gets one response at a time into Google Docs, and Google Docs can download any document as Markdown (File → Download → Markdown) for Notion's import.
It's more clicks than a Markdown button, but it stays within the assistants' built-in features.
Organising a chat archive in Notion
A database works better than loose pages once you have more than a handful:
- Properties: Assistant (ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini), Date, Topic, Status (draft / final), and a URL property for the original chat link while it still exists.
- Views: a table grouped by assistant for browsing, a gallery for notes you reuse, a filter for "final" outputs.
- Templates: a page template with a short "what I asked and why" summary at the top; the imported transcript goes under a toggle so the page opens on the summary.
- Naming: import files are named after the chat title. Rename pages to the outcome ("Q3 pricing options, final table") rather than the question.
Treat the Notion page as the copy you keep and the chat as disposable. Chats can be deleted or expire (Gemini auto-deletes after 18 months by default); a Notion page doesn't. For a local-first alternative with the same Markdown files, see AI chats to Obsidian.
