ChatGPT chat to Google Drive
ChatGPT to Google Docs
The Convert ChatGPT to Google Doc extension adds a Google Docs button to chatgpt.com. Click it and a new Google Doc containing the conversation, one answer or the messages you picked appears in your Drive and opens in a new tab, ready to share or edit.

Quick answer: To export a ChatGPT chat to Google Docs, install the Convert ChatGPT to Google Doc extension in Chrome or Edge, open the conversation on chatgpt.com and click Google Docs in the toolbar at the top of the chat. The extension converts the conversation and creates a native Google Doc in your Drive, then opens it in a new tab. ChatGPT itself has no Google Docs export, and pasting by hand drops tables and equations unless you paste as Markdown.
How to export a ChatGPT chat to Google Docs
- Install the extension. Add Convert ChatGPT to Google Doc, Microsoft Word, PDF from the Chrome Web Store. Use Chrome or Edge; the Google sign-in it relies on isn't available in other browsers.
- Refresh chatgpt.com. The toolbar at the top of the chat gains Google Docs, Word and PDF buttons, and a Google Docs button appears under each answer.
- Click Google Docs. The first time, Google asks you to allow the extension to create files in your Drive. That permission is limited to files the extension creates.
- Wait for the Doc to open. You'll see "Formatting your content…", then "Creating your Google Doc…" and "Saving to Google Drive…". A new tab opens with the finished Doc, saved in your My Drive and named after the chat.
From there it's an ordinary Google Doc: share it, comment on it, move it into a folder, or download it in another format.
What's in the Google Doc
The Doc is converted from the chat's underlying content, so the structure survives the trip:
- Headings, paragraphs, bold and italic, bulleted and numbered lists
- Tables as real Google Docs tables (the manual alternative is in copying a ChatGPT table)
- Code blocks in a monospaced font with indentation kept
- Equations, rendered as part of the document (see the note below)
- Images ChatGPT generated, images you uploaded, and charts or diagrams ChatGPT drew, as pictures
- Links, including the citations in Deep Research reports, as clickable links
- Your prompts as shaded blocks between the answers, unless you turn them off
One honest caveat on maths: Google Docs doesn't have Word's editable equation objects. Equations look right in the Doc, but if you need to edit them with an equation editor afterwards, export to Word instead. The same extension has the Word button next to the Google Docs one.
Choosing what goes into the Doc
- Whole conversation: the toolbar button. The extension fetches the complete chat from ChatGPT's data, so long conversations aren't cut off at what's on screen.
- One answer: the Google Docs button under that reply (single-response exports explains the options). Your question is left out by default; tick Single response exports under Include Only ChatGPT Responses in in the extension's settings to keep it.
- Only the answers from a long chat: tick Entire conversation exports in the same settings group.
- A few messages: switch on Select Messages Checkbox in settings, tick the checkbox in the toolbar, click the messages and then click Google Docs.
Pasting into Google Docs by hand
If you don't want an extension, Google Docs can turn ChatGPT's text into formatting, provided you paste it the right way:
- In ChatGPT, use the copy button under the answer. ChatGPT copies the answer as Markdown, which is why a plain paste shows
##and**characters. - In your Google Doc, go to Tools → Preferences and make sure Enable Markdown is ticked.
- Right-click where you want the text and choose Paste from Markdown. Headings, lists, bold and links are converted as they paste. Tables often aren't, so check them.
This works well for one answer. It gets tedious for a whole conversation, equations don't convert, and images have to be added separately, which is where the extension saves time. Google's help page on Markdown in Google Docs lists the exact options.
Large chats: the Word-on-Drive fallback
Google Docs has a size ceiling for the conversion that turns an uploaded file into a Doc. If a conversation is too big, the extension tells you "This export is too large for Google Docs. Saving as a Word file on Drive…" and uploads a .docx to your Drive instead, then opens it. You can leave it as a Word file or right-click it in Drive and open it with Google Docs, which converts it in place. Either way nothing is lost; you just get a Word file rather than a Doc on the first try.
Add-ons that put ChatGPT inside Docs are a different thing
Searching "ChatGPT Google Docs" turns up add-ons like GPT for Docs and Sheets that run ChatGPT from inside a document. They're for writing new text in Docs with an API key, not for saving a conversation you already had. If you want the chat from chatgpt.com in a Doc, you want an exporter, which is what this page is about; the ChatGPT export overview lists the other routes, including PDF and Word. The Claude equivalent works the same way: Claude to Google Docs.
Free plan and limits
The extension is free to install. The free plan allows three entire-conversation exports and ten single-response exports per month, counted against the Google account signed in to your browser, and resets each month. The paid plan removes the limits, and its price is shown in the Manage License window in the extension.
