How to Copy Gemini Equations to Word

Gemini displays equations as typeset maths, and what you copy is either an image-like selection or raw LaTeX, neither of which Word turns into an equation on its own. Word for Microsoft 365 can convert the LaTeX in its equation editor, and the Gemini extension's Word export converts every equation in an answer at once.

By the Chat Downloader team · Updated · How we verify

Verified against the Gemini extension's source (v2.9) and Google's Gemini help center, October 2026.

Quick answer: A Gemini equation becomes an editable Word equation once Word has its LaTeX: ask Gemini to "show the LaTeX" if copying gives you nothing useful, open an equation box in Word for Microsoft 365 with Alt+=, set the Equation tab's input to LaTeX, paste the source without its $ wrappers and press Enter.

To convert every equation in an answer at once, the Gemini extension's Word export turns them all into native Word equations.

What Gemini puts on the clipboard

Gemini typesets maths in the browser from LaTeX source.

When you select and copy a rendered equation, browsers differ in what they hand over:

  • sometimes the LaTeX
  • sometimes the visible characters flattened into a line
  • sometimes very little

Word pastes whatever it receives as ordinary text, so you get \frac{a}{b}, or a b with the fraction bar lost, rather than a built-up equation.

The reliable way to get clean LaTeX is to ask for it.

Reply to Gemini with "show the LaTeX source for the equations above" and it answers with the formulas in a code block, which copies exactly. That also works for a whole derivation at once.

Turning one equation into Word maths

Word for Microsoft 365 has a LaTeX input mode in its equation editor; Microsoft's reference is the linear format equations page.

The whole conversion is four actions, and the table shows what each one does and what goes wrong at that step.

StepWhat to doIf it fails here
Open an equation boxPut the cursor where the maths belongs and press Alt+=A greyed-out Equation tab means the file is in Compatibility Mode; save it as .docx via File → Info → Convert
Choose the languageOn the Equation tab, under Conversions, pick LaTeX (Word defaults to UnicodeMath)If the LaTeX button is missing, you're on a Word version without it; see the FAQ
Paste the sourcePaste Gemini's LaTeX with the $, $$, \(/\) or \[/\] wrappers removedMulti-line display maths needs joining onto one line; bold or coloured text must be pasted as plain text
Build itPress Enter, or use the equation box's arrow menu and pick ProfessionalA command left as literal text is one Word doesn't know (\boxed{}, package macros); rewrite it in standard LaTeX

The result behaves like any Word equation:

  • it reflows with the paragraph
  • scales with the font
  • survives PDF export as real maths

Exporting every equation at once

For a derivation of thirty steps, or a table whose cells hold formulas, converting one at a time is slow. The AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs for Gemini extension does it in one export:

  1. With the extension installed, open the conversation on gemini.google.com.
  2. Click the Word button under the answer, or in the toolbar at the top for the whole chat.
  3. Open the .docx.

Gemini stores the LaTeX for each rendered equation inside the page, and the export reads it from there, so inline and display maths alike come out as native Word equations next to the text, tables and code.

Gemini to Word describes the rest of the file.

The PDF export typesets the maths for reading and printing; since a PDF can't be edited, Word is the format when the equations will change.

Where else the LaTeX can go

  • Google Docs, including Gemini's own Export to Docs, keeps the text but has no editable equation object and no LaTeX input. Equations become static.
    • For editable maths, go through Word: export or convert in Word, then open the .docx with Google Docs if you must end up there.
    • Workspace Marketplace add-ons that render LaTeX insert images.
  • PowerPoint and Excel on Microsoft 365 accept the same Alt+= and LaTeX workflow as Word.
  • Obsidian, Notion and other Markdown tools render LaTeX directly, so the extension's Markdown export is the better route when the destination is a notes tool.

Writing equations in Word without Gemini's LaTeX

Sometimes it's quicker to retype a short formula than to hunt for its source.

Word's equation editor accepts two linear notations:

  • UnicodeMath, where a/b becomes a fraction and x^2 a superscript as you type
  • LaTeX, switched on from the Equation tab

Both build the equation when you press space or Enter.

For anything longer than a line, asking Gemini for the LaTeX and pasting it is less error-prone than retyping, and the export handles whole documents.

Keep equations in equation boxes rather than typed as plain text; Word's spell-checker and autocorrect otherwise mangle symbols like x and ×.

Checking the result

Compare fraction bars, subscripts and bracket sizes against the rendered equation in Gemini; a missing brace is the usual cause of a subscript in the wrong place.

Any command left as literal text means Word didn't recognise it. Equations inside tables need copying a Gemini table as well as this page.

ChatGPT's equations copy differently because its copy button hands over LaTeX directly; see copying ChatGPT equations to Word. Every other way of getting content out of Gemini is listed in the Gemini export overview.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't Gemini equations paste into Word properly?

Because Gemini renders maths from LaTeX in the browser, and Word treats whatever reaches the clipboard as text. Word needs the LaTeX inside an equation box set to LaTeX mode before it builds an equation.

How do I get the LaTeX for a Gemini equation?

Ask Gemini directly: reply with 'show the LaTeX for that equation' and it prints the source in a code block you can copy. Selecting the rendered equation sometimes copies the LaTeX too, depending on the browser.

Can I convert all the equations in an answer at once?

Yes, with an export. The Gemini extension's Word button turns every equation in the answer, or the whole chat, into native Word equations in one step, with the surrounding text and tables intact.

Do equations survive Gemini's Export to Docs?

Only as static content. Export to Docs keeps the text, but Google Docs has no editable equation object like Word's, so equations become static content. For editable maths, export to Word.

Which Word versions convert LaTeX?

Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows and Mac. Perpetual-licence versions lack LaTeX input, and a file in Compatibility Mode disables it even on 365, which shows as a greyed-out LaTeX button; saving as .docx fixes the second case.
