ChatGPT chat to PDF

ChatGPT to PDF

The ChatGPT to PDF, Google Docs or Word extension puts a PDF button inside chatgpt.com. One click saves the complete conversation, a single answer or selected messages as a searchable PDF, with tables, code and equations laid out as a document rather than a screenshot of the page.

Available in the Chrome Web Store
  • One click inside chatgpt.com, shared chats too
  • PDF, Word (.docx) and Google Docs
  • Full chat, single response, selected messages, Canvas and Deep Research
  • Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc

Quick answer: The quickest way to turn a ChatGPT chat into a PDF is a Chrome extension that adds a PDF button to chatgpt.com. Install ChatGPT to PDF, Google Docs or Word, open the conversation, click PDF, and the whole chat downloads as a searchable PDF with its tables, code and equations intact. Printing the page with Ctrl+P also works, but only for the messages currently loaded on screen.

Two ways to get a PDF, and when each one is right

Print the page. Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) on chatgpt.com, choose Save as PDF as the destination and save. It needs nothing installed and it's fine for a short chat. Its weakness is what the browser can see: chatgpt.com keeps only a few replies in the page and loads the rest as you scroll, so the print dialog captures the loaded stretch, with the sidebar and buttons around it. Wide tables and code blocks can be clipped at the page edge.

Use the extension. The ChatGPT to PDF, Google Docs or Word extension doesn't print the page at all. It fetches the complete conversation from ChatGPT's own data, lays it out as a document, and saves that as a PDF. Long chats come out whole, tables stay inside the margins, and the file is named after the chat.

If you only ever need the occasional short chat on paper, print. If you save chats regularly, need the whole conversation, or want tables and maths to look right, the extension is faster and more reliable.

How to save a ChatGPT chat as a PDF with the extension

  1. Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store. It runs in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc on a computer.
  2. Refresh chatgpt.com. A toolbar with PDF, Word and Google Docs buttons appears at the top of the chat, and PDF and Word buttons appear under each answer.
  3. Click PDF in the toolbar for the whole conversation. A progress message shows the messages being read and the charts and images being prepared.
  4. The PDF saves to your Downloads folder. Long conversations take longer, mostly because of images; a text-only chat of a few dozen messages takes seconds.

What the PDF looks like

The export is a document, not a capture of the web page:

  • Your prompts appear as shaded blocks, with ChatGPT's answers in full below each one, so the file reads as a transcript.
  • Headings, lists and bold text keep their hierarchy. Tables are real tables with borders. Code blocks are monospaced with their indentation.
  • Equations are rendered as proper maths, not as \sqrt{x} text.
  • Images ChatGPT generated, images you uploaded, charts ChatGPT drew and Mermaid diagrams are embedded as pictures at their place in the conversation.
  • Links in answers and the citation markers in Deep Research reports are clickable.
  • What's left out: chatgpt.com's sidebar, buttons and the copy controls under each reply, and the Sources panel of a Deep Research report (its citations in the text are kept as links).

The text is real text. You can search the PDF, select a passage and copy it, and it prints at normal size on A4 or Letter; printing a ChatGPT conversation has the settings.

Only one answer, or only the answers

  • A single answer: click the PDF button under that reply. For an editable file instead, the Word export works the same way. By default the file contains just the answer, without your question. To include the question, open the extension's settings and tick Single response exports under Include Only ChatGPT Responses in. Saving a single ChatGPT response goes into the details.
  • Only ChatGPT's replies from the whole chat: in the same settings group, tick Entire conversation exports. Full exports then skip your prompts, which turns a long back-and-forth into a clean document of the results.
  • A few chosen messages: switch on Select Messages Checkbox in settings, tick the checkbox that appears in the toolbar, click the messages you want and press PDF.

Deep Research reports and Canvas already have a PDF option

Two kinds of ChatGPT content can be saved as PDF without any extension, and it's worth knowing before you install anything:

  • Deep Research reports: a completed report can be downloaded from ChatGPT as PDF, Word or Markdown. The official download covers the report itself; the extension's export is the way to get the report plus the follow-up questions and answers that came after it, in one file. The Deep Research export guide compares them.
  • Canvas: an open canvas has a download button in its top-right corner that saves it as PDF, Word or Markdown; see exporting a Canvas. The extension's buttons also switch to exporting the canvas while it's open.

For an ordinary conversation, ChatGPT offers no PDF download, which is the case the extension exists for.

Open any chatgpt.com/share/… link on a computer with the extension installed and the PDF button works there too, without signing in. That's the simplest way to keep a copy of a chat a colleague shared before they delete it or change the link. Remember that shared links are snapshots: the owner has to choose Update link in ChatGPT for later messages to appear, so the PDF contains what was shared, not what was said afterwards.

Other routes out of ChatGPT, including the official data export, are compared in the ChatGPT export overview. If you're switching assistants, the same idea exists for Claude: turn a Claude share link into a PDF needs no extension at all.

Free plan and limits

Install and use the extension for free. The free plan covers three entire-conversation exports and ten single-response exports per month, counted against the Google account signed in to your browser, and resets at the start of each month. The paid plan removes those limits, and its current price is shown in the Manage License window inside the extension.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF?

Yes. ChatGPT has no PDF button for a conversation, so either print the page with Ctrl+P and choose Save as PDF, which only captures the messages currently loaded, or use the extension, which fetches the full chat and saves it as a document-style PDF in one click.

Why does Ctrl+P on chatgpt.com miss part of my chat?

Because chatgpt.com only keeps a few replies in the page at a time and loads the rest as you scroll. The print dialog sees the loaded part, not the whole conversation. The extension reads the complete conversation from ChatGPT's data instead, so nothing is cut off.

Is the PDF searchable?

Yes. The PDF is built from the conversation's content, so you can search it, select and copy from it, and it prints at normal document size. Images, charts and diagrams are embedded as pictures inside the text.

Does the free plan have a limit?

Yes. The free plan includes three entire-conversation exports and ten single-response exports per month, counted per Google account, resetting on the first of the month. The paid plan removes the limit.

Can I make a PDF of a chat someone shared with me?

Yes. Open the chatgpt.com/share link in your desktop browser and click the extension's PDF button. No ChatGPT sign-in is needed to export a shared chat.

Does it work on iPhone or Android?

No. Extensions don't run in phone browsers. On a phone, use ChatGPT's own Download as PDF for Deep Research reports, or wait and export from a computer.
