How to Back Up Your Gemini Chats
Gemini Apps Activity deletes conversations older than 18 months unless you change the setting, and a deleted chat can't be recovered. A good backup is two things: a Google Takeout archive of everything, and Word or PDF copies of the conversations you'll actually reopen.

Verified against the Gemini extension's source (v2.9) and Google's Gemini help center, October 2026.
Quick answer: Back up Gemini chats in two layers: a Google Takeout export limited to My Activity → Gemini Apps for the complete archive, and Word or PDF copies of the conversations you'll reopen, exported with the Gemini extension. Do it before Gemini's auto-delete does: activity older than 18 months is deleted by default, and deleted conversations can't be recovered.
The setting most people don't know about
Gemini saves conversations to Gemini Apps Activity, and that activity has an auto-delete period. Google's Gemini Apps Activity help page sets out the options: 3, 18 or 36 months, or Don't auto-delete activity.
The default is 18 months. A conversation from two years ago is probably already gone unless you changed it.
To check: open gemini.google.com, go to Activity, and look for the auto-delete control. Choose 36 months or turn auto-delete off if you want Gemini itself to keep more.
For work or school accounts, the administrator controls retention and you may not be able to change it, which makes your own backup more important, not less.
Two other facts from the same page shape the routine below:
- Deleting activity, manually or automatically, starts removal from Google's systems immediately, so there is no recycle bin.
- With Keep Activity turned off, conversations are kept only up to 72 hours and never appear in your activity, so there's nothing to export later.

- Why to back up before you delete
Layer one: the complete archive via Takeout
- At takeout.google.com, click Deselect all, tick My Activity, click All activity data included, deselect everything but Gemini Apps, and click OK. Tick the separate Gemini box too if you want your Gems.
- Choose a delivery method (email link, Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box), Export once, .zip, and click Create export.
- Download within 7 days of the email and store the archive in your normal backup location, in a dated folder.
Exporting your Gemini chat history walks through each screen and the box that catches people out.
The archive is an activity record (an HTML page plus media and uploads), not separate documents, and it reflects what existed when the export was created. Repeat it every few months; there's no incremental option.
The chats worth a document of their own
The Takeout archive is for completeness; it isn't something you'll open to re-read a conversation.
For the chats you return to, make a document, which opens anywhere, keeps tables and equations, and can be handed to someone else.
With the AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs for Gemini extension installed:
- Open the chat on gemini.google.com.
- Click Word in the toolbar for an editable copy or PDF for a fixed one. The extension scrolls back to load the earlier messages first, then exports the whole conversation.
- Give the file a name you'll search for later; the default is the chat's title. Store it beside the archive.
Which chats qualify? With auto-delete in mind, start with:
- Anything older than a year that you still use.
- Then anything that took Gemini several turns to get right.
- And anything you'd have to redo from scratch if it vanished.
That usually comes to a dozen or two conversations, not hundreds.
Gemini to Word and Gemini to PDF describe the files; Gemini to Markdown is the format if your archive lives in Obsidian or Notion.
For a single answer, Gemini's own Share & export → Export to Docs is a fine readable copy too, one response at a time.
Before you delete
Deleting a Gemini conversation, or a range of activity, is immediate and removes any public links to it. Before clearing out:
- Request a fresh Takeout export and wait for it. Don't rely on one from months ago.
- Export the chats you're deleting but might want as Word or PDF. It's one click each, and afterwards it's the only form they exist in.
- Check Settings & help → Your public links for links you've given to others; deleting the chat kills them. Gemini share links explains what viewers lose.
Then delete, from Activity:
- A single item ("Delete activity item").
- A range (last hour, last day, custom, or all time).
- Or a whole day.
What looks like a backup but isn't
- Share links. Views of a chat on Google's servers; they die with the chat.
- Pinned chats. Pinning stops a chat scrolling off your recent list; it doesn't exempt it from deletion or auto-delete.
- Bookmarks to chats, for the same reason.
- Screenshots. A picture of a chat can't be searched, and its tables and equations can't be copied out.
The ChatGPT version of this routine has different mechanics and no auto-delete by default: backing up ChatGPT chats. The Gemini export overview compares every way of getting a chat out.
