How to Copy a Gemini Table to Word, Docs or Sheets

Gemini gives tables a built-in Export to Sheets button, which is the easiest route into a spreadsheet. Getting the same table into Word or Google Docs is less tidy: a paste sometimes works and sometimes collapses into text. This guide covers each destination and the export that keeps every table a table.

Verified against the Gemini extension's source (v2.9) and Google's Gemini help center, October 2026.

Quick answer: To copy a Gemini table to Word, drag-select the table on gemini.google.com from its first cell to its last, copy, and paste into Word, which normally keeps it as a table. For Google Sheets, use Gemini's own Export to Sheets button at the table's bottom-right.

If a paste collapses into text, convert it with Insert → Table → Convert Text to Table, or export the answer with the Gemini extension's Word or Google Docs button, which builds every table as a real table.

Three destinations, three different stories

Gemini treats tables as first-class only for spreadsheets. Google's export responses help page describes an Export to Sheets button that appears at the bottom-right of any table in a response.

Word and Google Docs have no equivalent, so they rely on the clipboard, and the clipboard is where things go wrong.

When you copy from Gemini, two versions travel: the formatted table and a plain-text fallback.

Word takes the formatted one almost always. Google Docs usually does.

Plain editors, Sheets cells and some note apps take the text, which is tab- or space-separated rows that look nothing like a table. Knowing that tells you which fix below you need.

Google Sheets: use the button

  1. In the Gemini response, hover over the table and click Export to Sheets at its bottom-right.
  2. A new spreadsheet opens in your Drive with the table as cells, header row first.

Limits:

  • The button only appears for responses that contain a table.
  • Tables that include images can't be exported.
  • For Workspace accounts the option depends on your administrator's settings.

If the button is missing, select the table, copy, and paste into Sheets; if it lands in one column, select the cells and use Data → Split text to columns (Google's steps) with Tab as the separator.

Word: paste the rendered table

  1. On gemini.google.com, drag to select the table itself, from the first header cell to the last cell. Don't use Gemini's copy button under the answer for this; selecting the rendered table gives Word the formatted version.
  2. Copy and paste into Word. You should get a Word table with a header row. Use Table Design to restyle it.

If Word shows rows of text instead, the columns are still there, separated by tabs. To fix it:

  1. Select those rows and run Word's Convert Text to Table command from the Insert → Table menu (Microsoft documents it here).
  2. Choose Tabs as the separator and confirm the column count Word proposes.
  3. Then mark the top row as a header row in Table Design.

The same command handles the pipe-separated text you get from ChatGPT, with a different separator; that case is covered on the ChatGPT tables page.

Google Docs: paste, or go via Sheets

Dragging to select the rendered table and pasting into a Doc usually produces a real Docs table. When it doesn't, the shortest fix is through Sheets:

  1. Click Export to Sheets on the table.
  2. Select the cells in the new spreadsheet and copy.
  3. Paste into the Doc.

Docs turns pasted spreadsheet cells into a table every time.

Gemini's own Share & export → Export to Docs under the answer also keeps tables intact, since it builds the Doc rather than relying on the clipboard. It brings the rest of the answer along; Gemini to Google Docs covers it.

The export that skips the clipboard

If you'd rather never fix a table, the AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs for Gemini extension exports the answer, or the whole conversation, from its underlying content.

Each table becomes a real table:

  • A Word table in the .docx.
  • A Docs table in the Google Doc.
  • A table laid out within the margins in the PDF.
  • A pipe table in the Markdown file.

Click the Word or Google Docs button under the answer that contains the table, or in the toolbar for the whole chat. Gemini to Word lists everything else the file keeps.

Before you rely on a pasted table

  • Numbers that refuse to sum have usually picked up invisible spacing characters in the paste. Reformat the column as a number; the cells that stay left-aligned are the ones to fix.
  • Column widths aren't carried by a paste. Set them in Word with Layout → AutoFit, or in Docs by dragging the borders.
  • Equations inside cells need their own handling; see copying Gemini equations to Word.
  • The values themselves are only as right as Gemini's answer. A perfect paste of a wrong number is still wrong.

ChatGPT's tables fail differently, because its copy button hands over Markdown pipes; copying a ChatGPT table covers that. For the bigger picture of what leaves Gemini and how, start at the Gemini export overview.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a Gemini table into Google Sheets?

Click Export to Sheets at the bottom-right of the table in Gemini. Google creates a new spreadsheet in your Drive with the table in it. The button appears only for responses that contain a table, and tables with images can't be exported.

How do I copy a Gemini table to Word?

Select the table on the page by dragging from its first cell to its last, copy, and paste into Word; Word usually keeps it as a table. If it arrives as lines of text, use Insert → Table → Convert Text to Table with Tab as the separator, or export the answer to Word with the Gemini extension.

Why did my Gemini table paste as plain text?

Because the app you pasted into took the plain-text version from the clipboard instead of the formatted one. Dragging to select the rendered table rather than using the copy button usually fixes it; otherwise convert the text to a table in the destination.

Is there a way to avoid fixing tables by hand?

Yes. The Gemini extension's Word and Google Docs buttons export the answer, or the whole chat, with every table already built as a real table with a header row. The PDF export lays tables out within the page margins.

Do merged cells copy from Gemini?

No. Gemini's tables are simple grids without merged cells, so there's nothing to lose; if a table looks merged on screen, it's a display effect. Expect one value per cell and restructure afterwards if you need more.
