Gemini chat to Google Drive

Gemini to Google Docs

Gemini has a built-in Export to Docs under every response, which is the right tool for one answer. For a whole conversation in one Doc, or to skip the per-answer repetition, the Gemini extension adds a Google Docs button that creates a single Doc of the entire chat in your Drive.

Available in the Chrome Web Store
  • One click inside gemini.google.com
  • PDF, Word (.docx), Google Docs and Markdown
  • Full chat, single response or Gemini's replies only
  • Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc

Quick answer: To export a Gemini response to Google Docs, click Share & export → Export to Docs under the answer; Gemini creates a new Doc in your Drive and opens it. That option works one response at a time.

To put an entire Gemini conversation into one Google Doc, install the Gemini extension and click Google Docs in its toolbar; it loads the full chat and creates a single Doc in your Drive.

Gemini's built-in Export to Docs

This is the one place where Gemini beats the other assistants: a native Google Docs export, documented in Google's help center under export responses from Gemini Apps.

  1. Under the answer you want, click Share & export.
  2. Choose Export to Docs.
  3. A new Google Doc opens in a new tab, saved in your Drive, containing that response.

The same menu offers Draft in Gmail, which creates a draft email with the answer (Gmail accounts only), and tables have their own Export to Sheets button at the bottom-right of the table, for tables without images.

If you use Gemini through a Workspace account, which of these appear depends on your administrator's settings.

What Export to Docs does well: headings, lists, links and tables arrive as proper Docs elements, and images come along.

Its limits are scope and repetition. It exports one response, never the conversation and never your prompt, so a chat with fifteen useful answers means fifteen Docs, or one Doc and fourteen copy-pastes.

And there's no Word or PDF option; those need a download from inside the Doc afterwards.

The whole conversation in one Doc

The AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs for Gemini extension adds a Google Docs button to a toolbar at the top of the chat, plus one under each response.

  1. Install the extension in Chrome or Edge (the Google sign-in it uses isn't available in other browsers) and refresh gemini.google.com.
  2. Click Google Docs in the toolbar. The first time, Google asks you to allow the extension to create files in your Drive. The permission is limited to files it creates.
  3. The extension scrolls back to load earlier messages Gemini hasn't rendered, showing the count, then converts the conversation. You'll see "Formatting your content…", "Creating your Google Docs…" and "Saving to Google Drive…".
  4. The Doc opens in a new tab, saved in your My Drive and named after the chat.

The Doc contains the whole conversation in order:

  • Your prompts as blocks.
  • Gemini's answers in full.
  • Tables as Docs tables.
  • Code in a monospaced font.
  • Images embedded.

To get only Gemini's side, tick Export only Gemini responses under Conversion settings in the extension's settings first.

The per-response Google Docs button under an answer does the same for one answer, which gives you a second route when Gemini's own Export to Docs is missing from your account.

Equations and very long chats

Two honest caveats apply to both routes.

Google Docs has no editable equation object equivalent to Word's, so equations look right in a Doc but can't be edited with an equation editor; if you'll edit maths, the Word export is the better format.

And Google Docs has a size limit for converting an uploaded file into a Doc. When a conversation exceeds it, the extension tells you it's "too large for Google Docs" and saves a Word file to your Drive instead, which you can open with Docs from Drive to convert in place.

Tables, Deep Research and the other assistants

Tables are the thing people most often move from Gemini to Docs; copying a Gemini table to Word or Docs covers Export to Sheets and the manual routes.

Deep Research reports have Export to Docs too, with their own wrinkles: exporting a Deep Research report.

The Gemini export overview compares every way out of Gemini, and the ChatGPT and Claude extensions do the same job for those assistants: ChatGPT to Google Docs, Claude to Google Docs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I export a Gemini response to Google Docs?

Under the response, click Share & export, then Export to Docs. Gemini creates a new Google Doc in your Drive containing that answer and opens it. Google documents this in its Gemini help center.

Can Gemini export the whole conversation to Google Docs?

Not on its own. Export to Docs works per response. The Gemini extension's Google Docs button exports the entire conversation, including earlier messages it loads first, into one Doc.

Where does the Doc go?

Into the My Drive root of your Google account, in both cases. Gemini's Export to Docs uses the account you're signed in with; the extension asks for permission limited to files it creates and uses the same Drive.

Does the extension's Google Docs export work in Brave or Arc?

No. The Google sign-in it relies on is only available in Chrome and Edge. In Brave and Arc the PDF, Word and Markdown buttons work; the Google Docs button doesn't.

What if the conversation is too long for Google Docs?

If Google Docs can't convert an export that large, the extension saves it to your Drive as a Word file instead and opens that. Right-click it in Drive and open it with Google Docs to convert it in place.
