How to Export Your Gemini Chat History
Gemini has no export-all button of its own. Your complete history comes through Google Takeout as an archive of your Gemini Apps activity, delivered by email link or to a cloud drive. Here's exactly which boxes to tick, what arrives, and what it can't give you.

Quick answer: To export your Gemini chat history, go to takeout.google.com, click Deselect all, tick My Activity, click All activity data included, deselect everything in the pop-up except Gemini Apps, then create the export. Google emails a link to a ZIP archive within hours or days; the link lasts 7 days.
The archive holds your chats as an activity page, not as separate documents. For one conversation as a PDF or Word file, use the Gemini extension instead.
The Takeout steps, with the box that catches people out
Google documents the process on its Download your Gemini Apps data page. The step most people get wrong is which box holds the chats.
- Go to takeout.google.com and make sure you're signed in to the Google Account you use with Gemini.
- Under "Select data to include", click Deselect all. Otherwise you'll export your entire Google account.
- Scroll to My Activity and tick it. This is where Gemini conversations live.
- Click All activity data included. In the pop-up, click Deselect all, tick Gemini Apps, and click OK. Now the export is limited to Gemini.
- Optionally tick the separate Gemini box. It contains your Gems (custom Gemini personas), not your conversations.
- Click Next step. Choose how to receive it: an email link, or directly to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box. Choose Export once, .zip, and an archive size (larger exports are split into several files).
- Click Create export. Google emails you when the archive is ready, which can take a few hours or a few days.
- Download within 7 days of the email; after that the link expires and you repeat the request.
If you're in Google's Advanced Protection Program, the export is scheduled two days later and recurring exports aren't available.
What's in the archive
The archive covers your Gemini Apps activity:
- The chats.
- Media Gemini generated for you.
- Files you uploaded.
The activity itself arrives as an HTML page that opens in any browser and lists prompts and responses in date order, with a search box's worth of structure (Ctrl+F is your friend).
Generated images and uploaded files sit alongside as files.
Things to expect:
- It's an activity log, not documents. There's no per-conversation file, no table of contents, and formatting is plain: tables and code appear as text.
- It's a snapshot. Anything you add or delete between requesting and receiving the export may not be reflected.
- It doesn't delete anything. Google is explicit: downloading your activity doesn't remove it from Google's servers.
- Deleted chats aren't in it. If auto-delete has already removed older activity (the default is 18 months), it's gone before you export. Backing up Gemini chats covers the auto-delete settings.
When the export comes back empty or incomplete
- Wrong box. Ticking only the Gemini product box gives you Gems and no chats. The conversations are under My Activity → Gemini Apps.
- Keep Activity is off. If you've turned off Gemini Apps Activity, conversations aren't saved beyond 72 hours and there's little to export.
- Work or school account. Workspace administrators control Gemini Apps Activity, and may have retention or activity disabled. Takeout for Gemini may also be unavailable; ask the administrator.
- Auto-delete already ran. Older chats were removed at the retention period you (or the default) set.
When you want one conversation, not all of them
Takeout is the archive. When the goal is a readable file of a particular chat, there are two shorter routes:
- Gemini's own Export to Docs under a response, which handles one answer at a time. Gemini to Google Docs explains it.
- The Gemini extension, whose toolbar button exports the whole conversation as PDF, Word, Google Docs or Markdown after loading the earlier messages Gemini hasn't rendered.
- It's the route for "I want this chat as a document", as opposed to "I want everything I've ever said".
Switching assistants altogether is a bigger job, covered in moving a conversation between AI assistants.
A sensible pattern is both: Takeout a few times a year for the complete record, and a document export of the chats you'll reopen as you go.
Reading the activity page usefully
Open the HTML file in a browser and search for a phrase you remember; each hit sits next to its date and the rest of that exchange.
For anything more structured, upload the file to Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude and ask for a list of conversations by topic or date.
Moving conversations into another assistant is a separate question: moving between ChatGPT and Claude covers what imports and what has to be pasted as context, and the same limits apply to Gemini's archive.
ChatGPT's equivalent is an in-app export rather than Takeout, with different contents; see exporting your ChatGPT chat history. The Gemini export overview puts Takeout next to the per-chat routes.
