ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini Export Guides

Most pages on this site are about one assistant. These guides across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are the ones that aren't: side-by-side comparisons of how ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini share and export conversations, and workflows such as moving a chat between assistants or into Notion and Obsidian, where the steps are the same whichever assistant you started in.

By the Chat Downloader team · Updated · How we verify

Verified against the three extensions' source and the OpenAI, Anthropic and Google help centers, October 2026.

Quick answer: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each let you share a chat by link and download your whole history, but none of them turns an ordinary conversation into a PDF or Word document on its own.

The guides here compare the three side by side and cover the workflows that are the same whichever assistant you use:

  • Choosing an export method.
  • Moving a chat to another assistant.
  • Getting chats into Notion or Obsidian.

The last two rows are the ones that decide how you should keep your work: no assistant gives you a conversation as a document, and one of them removes conversations on a timer.

The comparison guide below has the detail and the sources behind each cell.

Comparisons

  • How ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini share and export chats. One table for share links (who can open them, what's included, whether they update), one for built-in downloads, one for full-history exports.
    • Read this before deciding which assistant to use for work you'll need to keep.
  • How to choose an AI chat exporter. Seven approaches, from copy and paste to extensions, judged on what they do to tables, equations, images and long chats, and what happens to your data.
    • No product names; the test is what to check, not what to buy.

Workflows

Where to start if you're new to exporting

Three steps:

  1. Read the comparison once, so you know what your assistant can and can't do by itself.
  2. Then go to your assistant's section for the task you have today.
  3. Come back here when the task spans assistants: switching from one to another, or building an archive outside all of them.

If you're evaluating tools, the exporter checklist is the ten-minute test to run on anything, ours included.

Where the per-assistant detail lives

Each assistant has its own section with the specifics:

  • The Claude section (converter, extension, artifacts, share links).
  • The ChatGPT section (three extensions, Deep Research, Canvas, the data export).
  • The Gemini section (Export to Docs, Takeout, auto-delete, the extension).

The cross-assistant guides link into those sections rather than repeating them.

How these pages are kept honest

Claims about each assistant are checked against its vendor's help center and linked; claims about our extensions come from their source code. The about page explains the method, and every page carries a line saying what it was verified against and when.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI assistant is easiest to export conversations from?

Gemini has the most built-in options for a single answer (Export to Docs, Gmail and Sheets), ChatGPT has official downloads for Deep Research reports and Canvas, and Claude has export buttons on its newer artifacts. None of the three can save an ordinary conversation as a PDF or Word file without an extension or copy and paste.

Can I move a conversation from one assistant to another?

Not as a conversation. None of the three imports another assistant's chats. Claude can import memory from another assistant, and any of them can read a conversation you export as Markdown or PDF and upload or paste as context.

Do these guides apply to the apps as well as the websites?

Yes for the official features, with caveats. The official sharing and export features are described for the web versions, with app differences noted where the help centers mention them. The extensions run only in desktop browsers.
