How to Export a Gemini Deep Research Report
A finished Gemini Deep Research report opens in a side panel with Gemini's own Share & export menu, which sends it to Google Docs. For Word, PDF or Markdown without the Docs detour, the Gemini extension exports the open report panel directly, and with the panel closed, the conversation that produced it.

Verified against the Gemini extension's source (v2.9) and Google's Gemini help center, October 2026.
Quick answer: To export a Gemini Deep Research report, open the report in its side panel and use Gemini's Share & export menu to export it to Google Docs, then download Word or PDF from the Doc if you need them.
For Word, PDF or Markdown directly, keep the report panel open and click the matching button in the Gemini extension's toolbar; it exports the panel's content. With the panel closed, the same button exports the conversation around the report.
Gemini's own export: Export to Docs from the report
When Deep Research finishes, Gemini presents the report in a panel beside the chat, with a table of contents and the sources it used.
The panel carries Gemini's Share & export menu, and Export to Docs there (the same control Google describes for exporting responses) creates a new Google Doc of the report in your Drive and opens it.
From the Doc, File → Download gives you Microsoft Word (.docx) or PDF Document if the report needs to leave Google's ecosystem.
Users have noted that the exported Doc uses Letter size and one-inch margins regardless of your Docs defaults, so adjust File → Page setup before downloading if you need A4.
What this route doesn't cover: the conversation around the report (your brief, the research plan Gemini proposed, your edits to it, and anything you asked afterwards), and any format other than Docs without the download step.

Straight to Word, PDF or Markdown with the extension
The AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs for Gemini extension's toolbar knows when a panel is open. With the report showing:
- Make sure the report panel is open and has finished loading.
- Click Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs in the extension's toolbar at the top of the page. The tooltip reads "Exports the canvas content as a … file", confirming you're exporting the panel rather than the chat.
- The file downloads, named after the chat, or the Doc opens in your Drive.
The report's headings, paragraphs and tables come through as document elements; in Word, any equations arrive as editable equations.
Open the result and check the references section and any citation links against the report before you rely on them, since citation formatting varies between reports.
If the extension reports "No canvas content found to export", the panel hasn't finished loading; wait and try again.
The report plus the conversation
Deep Research conversations hold more than the report:
- The brief you wrote.
- The plan Gemini proposed and you adjusted.
- The follow-up questions that often produce the most useful answers.
To keep that record:
- Close the report panel so the conversation is what's on screen.
- Click PDF or Word in the extension's toolbar. The extension scrolls back to load earlier messages and exports the whole conversation. Long research threads take a few minutes; Stop & Export Now exports what's loaded.
You end up with two files, the report and the thread, which is usually clearer than one file with both interleaved. Tick Export only Gemini responses in the extension's settings if you want the thread without your prompts.
Choosing between Docs, Word, PDF and Markdown
- Google Docs when colleagues will comment or edit, and the quickest route is Gemini's own Export to Docs.
- Word when the report goes into a template or needs tracked changes, or when it contains maths you'll edit.
- PDF for the version you send or file; nothing moves.
- Markdown for Notion, Obsidian, a wiki, or to feed the report to another assistant as context. Gemini has no Markdown option of its own, so this is the extension's job; Gemini to Markdown covers it.
What to check in the exported report
Deep Research reports are long and structured, so a quick pass over the file catches the things that drift in conversion:
- The table of contents. Gemini's panel shows one; the export doesn't generate one. In Word, insert a table of contents from the heading styles (References → Table of Contents) and it builds itself. In Google Docs, Insert → Table of contents does the same.
- Tables. Comparison tables are common in research reports. Confirm columns line up and nothing was clipped, especially in the PDF.
- Images and charts. If the report included generated images, check they appear where the text refers to them.
- The sources section. Count the references against the panel. If any are missing, copy that section from the panel into the document by hand; it's the part a reader will want to click.
Habits that keep research reports useful
- Export before you iterate. If you'll ask Gemini to revise the report, save the version you want first; later versions replace it in the panel.
- Rename the file. Both routes name the file after the chat, which is often Gemini's summary of your prompt. Use the report's subject and date.
- Check the sources once. A report's value is in its references. Whichever route you used, confirm the links open before sending it on.
- Keep the plan. The research plan Gemini proposed is part of the conversation export, and it's what you'll want when someone asks how the report was scoped.
ChatGPT's Deep Research reports have their own download in PDF, Word and Markdown, with a different set of gaps; see exporting a ChatGPT Deep Research report.
