How Gemini Share Links Work

Gemini's Share conversation option creates a public g.co/gemini/share link to the entire chat as it was at that moment. Anyone with the link can read it, reshare it and often continue it. Here's what the link contains, when it disappears, how to delete it, and how to keep a copy that outlives it.

Verified against the Gemini extension's source (v2.9) and Google's Gemini help center, October 2026.

Quick answer: A Gemini share link, created with Share → Share conversation under any response, publishes the entire conversation as a public snapshot at g.co/gemini/share. Anyone with the link can read it, reshare it and usually continue it in their own account; your name isn't shown.

The link stops working if you delete it under Settings & help → Your public links, or if the chat is deleted or drops out of your pinned and recent chats.

A link is not a copy: export the chat as PDF or Word if you need to keep it.

How sharing works

Google describes the feature in its share a chat help page. The essentials:

  1. Below any response, click Share, then Share conversation. (If the chat uses a Gem, you choose between sharing the conversation alone or with the Gem's instructions.)
  2. Gemini creates a link beginning g.co/gemini/share and copies it. The share menu also offers direct posting to a few social platforms.
  3. The link opens a read-only page of the whole conversation, regardless of which response you clicked Share under. It's a snapshot: edits and new messages after sharing don't appear unless you share again.

Included on the shared page:

  • every prompt and response
  • images you uploaded (downloadable by viewers)
  • Canvas documents, images and videos Gemini generated

Your name and account aren't attached to the URL or the page.

What viewers can do

  • Read it without signing in, and reshare the link to anyone.
  • Continue this chat in their own Gemini account, which copies the conversation to them. Exceptions:
    • Chats made with Gems can't be continued.
    • Users under 18 can't continue chats.
    • If you have a Google AI subscription, viewers need one too.
  • Report the chat with the Report option under the headline.

That "continue" ability is the detail to remember before sharing: a copy of the conversation can end up in someone else's account, where deleting your link has no effect.

A share link lives only as long as the chat is saved in your Gemini Apps Activity. It dies when:

  • You delete it under Settings & help → Your public links (one link, or Delete all links).
  • You delete the chat, or any part of it is deleted manually or by auto-delete.
  • The chat is removed from your pinned and recent chats.

Visitors then see a message that the chat no longer exists and are sent to gemini.google.com.

Deleting a link:

  • doesn't remove posts people made elsewhere
  • doesn't delete the chat from your own activity
  • doesn't touch copies viewers made by continuing the chat

When you can't share

Sharing isn't offered:

  • when you're signed out
  • when any part of the conversation used Google Workspace data (Gmail, Drive and so on)
  • when a Workspace administrator has disabled conversation sharing for your organisation

If the Share option is missing, that's usually why.

Because a link depends on the chat staying in your activity, it's the wrong tool for keeping a record.

Auto-delete, which is on by default at 18 months, will eventually remove the chat and the link with it. If the conversation matters, save a file:

  • Your own chat: open it on gemini.google.com and click PDF or Word in the Gemini extension's toolbar.
    • The extension loads the earlier messages and exports the whole conversation; Gemini to PDF and Gemini to Word show what you get.
    • For one answer, Gemini's own Share & export → Export to Docs works too.
  • A chat someone shared with you: the shared page is read-only and the extension's buttons aren't available there. Either use Continue this chat to copy it into your account and export from there, or ask the sender for a PDF.

Backing up Gemini chats turns this into a routine, including the auto-delete settings.

Updating a shared chat

Because a link is a snapshot, a conversation that continues after sharing isn't reflected in it.

There's no "update link" control: to share the newer state, click Share → Share conversation again, which produces a fresh link, and delete the old one from Your public links if you don't want two versions in circulation.

Tell recipients which link is current; the URLs don't indicate a date.

If you share often, exporting the chat as a PDF and sending the file avoids the versioning problem entirely, since each export is dated by its file.

Sharing safely

Google's own advice is not to put confidential information in conversations you share, and the mechanics explain why: anyone with the link can read and reshare it, and continuing copies it beyond your control.

Before sharing, scroll through the whole chat, not just the answer you meant to show, since the whole thing goes public.

Delete links you no longer need from Your public links, and remember that uploaded images are downloadable from the shared page.

All three assistants' links are compared in how ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini export chats.

Claude and ChatGPT share links behave differently in several ways, including whether later messages appear and what's included.

Why a Claude share link won't open covers the Claude side, and the Gemini export overview compares every way out of Gemini.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Gemini share link include the whole conversation?

Yes. Sharing from any response publishes the entire chat, not just that answer, as a snapshot taken when the link was created. Later messages aren't added unless you share again.

Who can see a shared Gemini chat?

Anyone with the link, whether or not you sent it to them, and they can reshare it. Your name and account aren't shown. Viewers can also use Continue this chat to carry it on in their own account, with some exceptions.

Does the share link include images and files?

Yes. Images you uploaded are downloadable from the shared page, and Canvas documents, images and videos Gemini generated are included.

How do I delete a Gemini share link?

On gemini.google.com, open Settings & help, choose Your public links, and click Delete public link next to the link, or Delete all links. Visitors then see that the chat no longer exists.

Why can't I share my Gemini chat?

Three common reasons: you're not signed in, part of the chat used Google Workspace data such as Gmail or Drive, or your Workspace administrator has turned sharing off. Chats with Gems can be shared, but viewers can't continue them.

Can I turn a shared Gemini chat into a PDF?

Not from the shared page itself. Open the original chat in your own account and use the Gemini extension's PDF or Word button, or Share & export → Export to Docs for one answer. Ask the sender to do the same if the chat isn't yours.
