How to Print a Gemini Conversation
Pressing Ctrl+P on gemini.google.com prints the messages currently loaded, with the sidebar around them, so a long conversation comes out as a fragment. Make a PDF of the complete chat first and print that; this guide shows how and which print settings to use.

Quick answer: A Gemini conversation prints completely only if you print a PDF of it rather than the web page. Ctrl+P on gemini.google.com captures just the messages loaded at that moment, plus the sidebar, so long chats come out as fragments.
The Gemini extension's PDF button loads the earlier messages, builds a document of the whole conversation and saves it, and that PDF prints cleanly on A4 or Letter.
Why printing the page disappoints
Gemini loads a long conversation in pieces. The recent exchanges are in the page; older ones arrive as you scroll upwards, and the page lets go of what you've scrolled away from.
The print dialog prints the page as it stands, so a chat with eighty turns prints the last dozen or so, and scrolling to the top first doesn't help because the bottom unloads as you go.
The second problem is that you're printing an application. All of this goes to paper:
- The chat list on the left.
- The model and settings controls.
- The input box.
- The Share & export buttons under each answer.
Wide tables and code blocks are clipped at the right margin, and page breaks fall wherever they land.
Browser "simplify page" or reader-mode options work on the same partial page, so they don't solve the first problem.
Printing the whole chat from a PDF
The AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs for Gemini extension scrolls back to load every message, then builds a document of the conversation and saves it as a PDF, so both problems disappear.
The sequence is:
- Extension installed on a desktop browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc).
- gemini.google.com refreshed.
- Conversation open.
- PDF clicked in the toolbar.
From there the extension does the loading: it scrolls back through the chat and reports how many messages it has gathered, which for a long conversation takes a few minutes.
Stop & Export Now cuts that short and exports what's loaded, useful when you only want the recent part on paper.
When the PDF lands in Downloads, open it in your PDF viewer and print from there with the settings below.
The PDF contains only the conversation:
- Your prompts as blocks.
- Gemini's answers in full.
- Tables within the margins.
- Code in a monospaced font.
- Images where they appeared.
Gemini to PDF describes the file in detail.
Printer settings for a clean copy
- Paper size: A4 or Letter to match your printer; the document reflows at either.
- Scale: 100%. Reduce only if a wide table is cut off, and try 90% first.
- Margins: default. "Minimum" just pushes text into the unprintable edge.
- Background graphics: on to print the shaded prompt blocks; off to save toner (the prompts still print as text).
- Headers and footers: off. They add the file name and date to every page, which you rarely want on a transcript.
- Double-sided: on for anything longer than a few pages.
- Page range: when you only need part of the conversation, pick the pages in the print dialog instead of making a second export.
Printing a Deep Research report or a Canvas
If what you want on paper is a Deep Research report or a Canvas document rather than the chat, open that panel first.
The extension's PDF button then exports the panel's content, which prints as a report with its headings and tables, without the conversation around it.
Gemini's own Share & export → Export to Docs on the panel is the alternative: open the Doc and print from Google Docs, adjusting File → Page setup if you need A4 rather than the Letter default. Exporting a Deep Research report compares the two.
Printing only Gemini's answers
A transcript with every prompt doubles the page count. To print only Gemini's replies, open the extension's settings before exporting and tick Export only Gemini responses under Conversion settings.
The PDF then contains the answers in order, which for a tutorial or a report written over several turns reads like one document.
When printing the page is still fine
A short chat of a few exchanges with no tables prints acceptably straight from the browser:
- Press Ctrl+P.
- Turn off headers and footers.
- Check the preview for the sidebar and for clipped tables.
- Print.
If either shows up, export instead.
For a single answer, Gemini's own Share & export → Export to Docs (Google's steps) followed by File → Print in Google Docs is another clean route, and it works on phones; Gemini to Google Docs covers it.
Keeping the PDF you printed from
The chat can be edited, deleted by you or removed by Gemini's auto-delete; the PDF is fixed. Keep it with the printout, and see backing up Gemini chats for a routine that doesn't depend on remembering.
The same print problem exists for ChatGPT, for a slightly different technical reason: printing a ChatGPT conversation. The Gemini export overview compares every way out of Gemini.
