Export Your ChatGPT Chat History
ChatGPT can export every conversation on your account as a ZIP file from Settings → Data controls. It arrives by email, sometimes days later, with a link that expires after 24 hours. Here's what's in it, what isn't, and when a per-chat export is the better tool.

Quick answer: To export your ChatGPT chat history, open Settings → Data controls on the web, select Export under Export data and confirm. OpenAI emails a link to a ZIP containing every conversation as a JSON file and a browsable HTML page; the link expires 24 hours after it arrives, and the export can take up to seven days. It covers all chats at once. For a readable document of one chat, use an extension.
How to export everything from ChatGPT
OpenAI documents the steps in its help center (How do I export my ChatGPT history and data?); here they are with the parts the page doesn't mention.
- Sign in on the web. The export isn't offered while logged out, and it's easiest to find on chatgpt.com rather than in the apps.
- Open Settings → Data controls. Your profile menu is at the bottom-left of the sidebar.
- Select Export under Export data, then Confirm export. ChatGPT tells you the file will be emailed.
- Wait for the email. For a typical personal account it often arrives within minutes; the help center's official figure is up to seven days. A second request isn't possible while one is pending.
- Download within 24 hours. Click Download data export in the email while signed in to the same account. After 24 hours the link stops working and you have to request the export again.
- Unzip it. You'll find the files described in the next section.
If the export never arrives, the help center suggests contacting support after seven days. There's also a second route through OpenAI's privacy portal (privacy.openai.com → Make a Privacy Request → Download my data), which produces the same kind of archive.
What's inside the ZIP
The archive is a data export, not a set of documents. The usual contents:
| File | What it is | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
conversations.json | Every conversation as structured data: titles, timestamps, model, each message's text | Feed it to a script, a search tool or another assistant |
chat.html | The same conversations as one web page | Open in a browser and use Ctrl+F to find a chat; it works offline |
shared_conversations.json | A list of the share links you've created | Audit what's public |
message_feedback.json, user.json and similar | Thumbs-up/down you gave, account details | Rarely needed |
The exact file list has changed over time, and whether generated images or uploaded files are included has varied between exports. If an image matters, save it from the chat directly rather than trusting the ZIP.
Two things to know about chat.html: it is a single page containing every chat, so for a large account it can be slow to open, and the formatting is plain. Tables appear as text, code loses its highlighting, and equations show as LaTeX. It's a searchable archive, not a document you'd send to anyone.
What the export can't do
- Bring back deleted chats. The export contains what exists at the moment you request it. A chat deleted last week isn't there.
- Give you one conversation. It's all-or-nothing. There's no checkbox for a single chat.
- Produce a readable document. JSON and a flat HTML page aren't a PDF of the report ChatGPT wrote you.
- Work in managed workspaces. Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces don't offer it; ask the workspace owner. Edu depends on your role and whether data residency is enabled.
- Be repeated quickly. One pending export at a time, and the 24-hour link means you can't come back to it next month. If you want a regular backup, you request a fresh export each time.
Turning one chat into a document
When what you actually need is a file of one conversation (a report, a plan, a set of answers to keep), skip the ZIP. The ChatGPT to Word or PDF extension adds PDF and Word buttons to every chat on chatgpt.com. One click exports that conversation, fetched in full from ChatGPT's data, with tables, code and equations kept as document elements. ChatGPT to PDF and ChatGPT to Word show what the files look like, and the ChatGPT export overview compares every route.
A sensible combination: request the official export every few months as the complete archive, and export the handful of conversations you'll reopen as Word or PDF as you go. Backing up ChatGPT chats turns that into a routine, including what to do before deleting an account.
Reading conversations.json without writing code
You don't need to be a programmer to get something out of the JSON:
- Search it. Open it in any text editor (VS Code handles large files well) and search for a phrase you remember. Each hit sits inside its conversation, with the title nearby.
- Ask an assistant. Upload
conversations.jsonto ChatGPT or Claude and ask for a list of conversation titles with dates, or for every chat about a topic. The file is large, so start with a filtered question. - Import it elsewhere. Several note-taking and memory tools accept ChatGPT's export format directly. Moving between ChatGPT and Claude explains what Claude can and can't take from it.
Claude's equivalent export works similarly and has its own quirks; see exporting your Claude chat history.
